Beautiful and useful book.

Reviewer: J. Lynch,
Bobbi Brown isn't about makeup trickery and techniques designed to alter the shape of a feature or make an average woman look like a drag Marilyn Monroe. If you are looking for this kind of book--as I suspect some of the other reviewers were--look elsewhere. What she is about is teaching a woman to look and feel her best, and this book does an excellent job of showing each and every step, in a way that a novice can understand and a pro can appreciate. Not everyone may feel they need this kind of instruction...but then why read a book called "Makeup Manual" if you already know it all?

Unlike her other books, which focus quite a bit on how health and lifestyle affect beauty, Bobbi's Makeup Manual really is dedicated to makeup artistry. A beginning makeup artist will find the detailed instructions on dramatic smoky eyes, false eyelash application, and how to work on a photo shoot especially useful. Bobbi also delves into extreme color, editorial looks, makeup as art, and tribal and geisha looks, all of which are territory uncovered in her previous books.

To summarize, if you appreciate Bobbi Brown's aesthetic, you will enjoy this book. If you want to know how to create basic and dramatic looks in a way that is pretty and modern, you will love this book. If you are a new makeup artist, you need this book. If you want to know how to transform Andy Rooney into Audrey Hepburn with lipstick, glitter, and seventeen concealers, you will hate this book. If you already know it all...write your own book. I'll look forward to reading it.

Cheers!
Outstanding and Painfully Truthful

If you are looking for makeup from waking up to waking up the Boardroom this book is filled with great advice. Typically, I have found that many women just DON'T want to COMMIT to looking good. They want great results with no effort. If you want to get rid of those dark circles, TRUST ME, it really may take 2 or 3 colors, powdered down and maintained during the day. As to the profession, Bobbi Brown does the best thing by exposing her kit and listing ALL the items that must be carried to every appt.,plus cleaned up and maintained for the next time. Again the wise message is there are no shortcuts to looking great or being in the beauty business. But the rewards of fun, meeting interesting people and escaping 9to5 if you wear makeup or use it as a profession are worth it!

This is one of those yummy books with glossy color pages that smell good! Everything you need to know about makeup is included in this volume from equipment to the "Ten-Step Guide to Perfect Makeup." Tips for advanced makeup care for fashion shows, television, and photography have a chapter all to themselves. The history of makeup in chronological order and "Who's Who in Makeup" are two delightful surprises at the end.
Clear and Concise, Great Advice and Information

The subtitle of BOBBI BROWN MAKEUP MANUAL indicates it is for the beginner to pro and I'm in the beginner category. All I'm interested in is doing my own makeup well. As a user of Bobbi Brown makeup for over ten years, I wanted to read this book to see what I could improve as formerly I was just applying the makeup as instructed by the BB counter saleswoman instructed me. I didn't know why I was doing what I was doing until I read this book.

The bulk of the book (the first 138 pages) is designed to be used by both individual women for their own makeup and can also be used by professionals. After giving some brief opinions and recommendations on which products or product types to use on various skin types or for different purposes (such as when to use crème blush versus powder blush for example), clear directions for applying the makeup properly are given in brief text along with full step by step directions. Important to note is that all skin colors and different ethnicities are included. Special techniques for Asians are given such as handling eye makeup. I was happily surprised to see special advice given for women with freckles, the advice is to not cover them up completely but to use special makeup effects that allow them to show through. Also covered is how to handle makeup with skin conditions such as rosacea and others.

A section at the beginning gives information about brush selection, the importance of proper brush maintenance, and the reasons to use high quality brushes. Advice on compiling makeup kits is included, specifically, what items to buy and how to organize them for different purposes (travel, everyday use, and so forth).

I was impressed also with the section about eyebrows and eyelashes. Included is information about the benefits of and best ways to shape the eyebrows and when eyebrow makeup should be used. Directions for penciling in eyebrows for women with sparse eyebrows or who are currently undergoing chemotherapy is useful too. The proper way to apply mascara, how to use an eyelash curler and even how to apply false eyelashes correctly is included.

What struck me the most about this book is that it gives just enough information to be thorough but not too much so as to bog down or intimidate the reader. The photographed stepped out directions are done well. It is easy to find the makeup technique or effect you want to achieve to use the book's directions when needed. When to use various effects is explained, such as daytime makeup and then touching it up for evening. Makeup for weddings and other formal events is also covered.

The last 80 pages are dedicated to professional makeup artists or those striving to become professional makeup artists. Those pages cover a range of topics from special makeup procedures to use on models in dramatic photo shoots to job basics such as career options, marketing oneself and booking work.

A short resources section is included at the end.

I read the book cover to cover and learned some things about makeup and makeup application that I never knew. I finally know how to pick the right shade of lipstick and foundation, and how to bring up the various levels of makeup for a more dramatic effect if desired. Now I will use the book as a reference guide for applying makeup. The book can easily be referenced for step by step directions.

Again from the perspective of an amateur, I loved this book. It breaks down a lot of information into easy to understand manner. I like the makeup style used by Bobbi Brown, of how natural her everyday makeup look is and the fact that Brown seeks to enhance a woman's unique features rather than putting the makeup first and the women second. Unlike other makeup companies, Brown does not just churn out trendy colors each season and expect women to buy and use them as they are `in style' at the moment. Brown wants women to look their best, to look natural but an "enhanced" natural. Brown's makeup recommendations for evening and special occasions is elegant and beautiful, the makeup is not overpowering.

i was mixed about buying this after reading the reviews but i looked at it in a bookstore and i'm glad i did. it's an excellent piece of work. it covers everything you can imagine about makeup, how to apply, tools, getting into the business, you name it. what thing i found particularly helpful was the troubleshooting tips. i didn't understand why certain things happened such as creasing concealor under the eye, bobbi brown says that applying enough product and the right way should take care of this. she discusses a lot about undertones which i found helpful because i didn't really know about that and since i'm venturing out in to mineral makeup i wanted to know more about my undertones to get a good match. she also discusses skin care routines and which are more appropriate for the various skin types.

i had one other bobbi brown book but this really can be a one stop reference guide for anyone interested in makeup. some of the negative reviews focus on the fact that she discusses things in her other books or basics about brushes, etc. in all fairness, there are some things that really should be included in any makeup book (i have several and they all discuss brushes, etc.) also, i think she does have a lot of the basics, which is what most women are curious about but she also went into some different and more artistic looks. she even talks about makeup application differences between someone being photgraphed in black and white vs. color. i feel like i studied this book as opposed to just read it. i feel like the content will be just as relevant 5-10 years from now as it is today so for that it was worth it to me. granted someone that has spent years in the business might not get a lot out of this but for someone who is just starting out, wanting to improve their techniques and see some great tips or just learn about the business side of this then you'll be happy with this one.

i just want to note that the photograpy is great and there is a lot of representation of all kinds of ethnicities, it doesn't feel slanted towards one ethnicity like some makeup books are. in particular there's a picture of a beautiful white woman with a small gap in her teeth. i found this to be one of the best pictures in the book. the woman looked unique and her makeup was nicely done, it was a nice photograph.
Practical, Detailed Makeup Manual for Novice to Professional

Perfect for : Personal Use, Great gift for a girl getting into makeup (promotes positive self image), Professionals in beauty/makeup field

In a nutshell: I was amazed at the amount of information and detail contained in this book! I was never really taught about makeup, so this has provided me with a lot of practical and technical information that I wasn't previously aware of. From basic beauty equipment and the basics of skin care to the business of makeup and professional artistry, this book has it all! The photographs are beautiful and help to show what the author is talking about, and the explanations are easy to understand. This is a beautiful book that would be great for someone wanting to learn more about makeup for themselves, or as a profession. It would also be a great book to have on-hand at a salon or spa.

Extended Review:
The information contained in the book covers just about everything I could ever think of pertaining to skin-care and makeup and then some. The colorful photographs serve to enhance the book by providing brilliant examples of what the author is talking about as well as how-to's with people actually showing how to apply what the author is explaining.

Content: The book progresses nicely through the following chapters: Makeup Artistry, Equipment, Skin, Face, Lips, Eyes, Ten-Step Guide to Perfect Makeup, Special Makeup Applications, Artistry, Essential Equipment for the Professional, Advanced Makeup Applications, Memorable Makeup Moments and Legends. It also contains a very helpful resource guide that provides Theatrical Makeup Stores, Makeup Artist Agencies, Creative Directories and Suggested Reading. As you can see, there is plenty of information designed both for the end-user (like me) as well as professionals!

Format: The chapters progress through the makeup application very nicely, with plenty of wonderful full-color photographs depicting both finished looks, and the steps to accomplish those finished looks (as well as products and colors).

Readability: Amazingly enough, with so much technical information throughout the book, it was written in a manner that was easy to read - even the harder artistry pages were easy to understand, if not easy to create for the novice!

Overall: A very complete book that is sure to teach everyone from the novice to the professional something about makeup in a way that is easy to understand and duplicate (hopefully! - I haven't tried ALL the examples).
Love it!

Love this book. It gives sound, practical advice to everyone from casual make-up users to the professional. The illustrations are wonderful and are fully supported by the written advice. I'm 42 years old and have been wearing make-up since I was 14 but Bobbi Brown's book taught me how to do things I've always wondered how to do but didn't know HOW to learn.

I recently got into makeup, so I went to the bookstore to check out various books. I looked at Kevyn Aucoin, Carmindy, etc. etc. (they are good too), but the one book that really spoke to me was this one!

1) I really like the simple layout and its focus on the basics, as well as being good to your skin. Yeah, you might already know a lot of things, but I doubt many people out there TRULY know the best way to do basics--- and that's where this book comes in.

2) I'm also a fan of the really organized nature of the book; so if you're someone who enjoys learning in a organized manner, it's great!

3) I really really like how the book touches on different ethnicities (this is so helpful esp. for asians like me --- who are frustrated by all those books out there that do not touch on how to do asian eye makeup--- which, for those who don't know requires a whole different technique than those with "normal" eye shapes.) I even looked at the Asian faces book (a book supposedly devoted to Asian faces) and still decided I like BB's better.

I guess if you're looking how to do crazy and novel and colorful styles of makeup for going out, this is probably not the book for you. But if you're just trying to look your best everyday, this is definitely the one!

Reviewer: Gman,
My husband bought me this book over 6 months ago and it is still a favourite. I love how its simple and so easy to read. If you are just wanting to know how to put make up on well or wanting to get into the business of beauty, this is for you. I found the section of 'what you need to do to be a makeup artist' and what she herself has in her kit really helpful. A beautiful book to own, fully worth it.

Most women learn how to apply makeup in their early teens and then continue learning new things as they mature. By the time they are fifty-seven (like I am) they pretty well know their faces, their coloring and what works and what doesn't. But suppose you started life at age fifty-seven, where would all of your experience be? This happened to me. I transitioned from male to female, and there I was with, pardon this, my face hanging out and nothing to put on it! For someone in my position, Bobbi Brown's Makeup Manual has been nothing less than a Godsend! I have learned more in the past few months from this book than I ever dreamed possible and instead of looking foolish with bad makeup and no knowledge of how to use it, I have not only learned how to apply it properly and what works for me, but have also gained a great deal of confidence just because I know what to do now. Thank You Bobbi, from the bottom of my heart. This book is just THAT GOOD!
Very Comprehensive Book

Reviewer: Avid Reader,
This is a good book for anyone interested in doing a better job of applying their makeup. It has numerous tips and procedures to be used for everyday wear and not just for those special occasions. I like the natural look that can be achieved with the right touch of makeup, and Bobbi Brown certainly helps with that. She is not an 'over the top' makeup artist.

Reviewer: Anne Cathrine Berget,
It came before the date that was estimated as the arrival and the condition was as good as could be expected when considering the postal service of my country (Norway).

Absolutely wonderful book. I am a complete novice and this gave me a lot of information without it being overwhelming. Giving hints and tips about how to match your natural colours with makeup. Would've liked a bit on how to compliment one's natural eye/lip shape but other than that it's wonderful. Also gives good insight to what is needed to be a professional make-up artist. Top book!
Wonderful Book for Beginners

I bought this book because I was looking for a book that would not only tell me but also show with photos how to apply make-up properly. This book certainly lived up to my expectations. I have always wanted to learn how to do a smoky eye, and now I know how to properly do a smoky eye because of this book. The photos are great but so are the explanations. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking to learn how to apply make-up. I think the book may be too simplistic for someone who is not a make-up novice.
You NEED this book.

I am a firm believer that EVERY woman that wears makeup needs this book. I have recommended it to all my family members and close friends. Bobbi Brown writes cleanly and gives tips and easy to follow instructions (along with pictures) that really can help anyone from those shy of makeup to aspiring makeup artists. This book is well organized and a perfect book for those that want to learn the basics or improve their makeup application techniques.
